Day 1
Utica - Bizerte - Ghar el Melh
We'll start our day with a pick up from Tunis and head to the Phoenician town of Utica which means "Old" and contrast the later colony Carthage, whose own name literally meant "New Town". Several authors date its foundation to around 11th century BC, other to 8th century BC. Excavations at the site, which is located on a low hill, have uncovered two Punic cemeteries, a necropolis and Roman ruins, including baths and several villas with preserved decorative floor mosaics.
We'll continue to Bizerte which is the northernmost city in Africa on the Mediterranean sea known for its ancient port but also its Medina rich in monuments, including a fortress and ramparts. Le vieux port (the old port) surrounded by white houses, cafes and large boats in bright colors is considered the most picturesque spot in Bizerte. You'll take a walk in the Medina, a bustling center of traditional crafts. In its winding labyrinth of narrow alleys and covered souks are the workshops of metalworkers and carpenters, butchers and grocery stores. It is a very authentic place to walk through, and unlike the Medinas of Hammamet and Monastir, it has not been restored so it oozes with all the exotic charm of the Orient. In the souks, the smells change from one alley to another, according to the shops of craftsmen and their products. You'll be able to enjoy a delicious lunch with a view on an old sea ship at the harbor. You'll have a chance to visit the Kasbah of Bizerte, built in the 17th century with only one entrance and 8 towers.
We'll conclude the day with a visit to Ghar el Melh, a former pirate base located on a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the sea and welcoming several fortresses. You'll be able to explore Borj El Loutani, part of an architectural complex of three Ottoman fortresses and an old harbour with arsenal dating back to the 17th century. We'll drive back to Tunis and drop you off at a location of your choice.
