Day 1
Kairouan - El Jem
Our first stop will be the city of Kairouan, founded in the 7th century during the Arab conquest of Africa. In the 9th century it became one of the largest metropolises in the Mediterranean and is currently the fourth holiest city of Islam. You'll see the best examples of Islamic architecture - the Great Mosque with its antique columns and imposing minaret, the Mausoleum of the Barber and the Aghlabid Basins. We'll take you to the colorful Medina and a lunch break with locals. You'll visit a local artisan carpet workshop and taste the famous makroudh pastry.
We'll drive to El Jem, home to one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This monumental amphitheater, built in the mid 3rd century AD, is the largest Roman monument left in Africa. You'll step back in time and explore the fascinating history before returning you to your destination in Tunis or Hammamet.
